A New Addition to the Family

Surprise!!!

Haha, nope I'm not pregnant.

So Scott and I had been discussing getting a dog for quite some time. We decided financially we weren't ready and were going to wait a couple more years. Unfortunately (fortunately?) a little puppy had a different idea.

Bella (Scott named her, not me, has nothing to do with twilight :) ) found us the day we came home from the hospital the second time with Caden. She was jumping on me as soon as I opened my car door. When Scott opened the door to let me into the house, she ran right in. We spent a week putting out flyers and ad's in the newspaper trying to find her owner's. She had a little red collar with a bell, but no tags. We guessed she had been dumped because she is not potty trained. We found a kennel by our mailboxes and it fits her perfectly and she goes right in. We figure it was hers.

We did go through a period where we were trying to find her a good home with some friends, but ultimately we just fell in love with her. She is fabulous with both boys, Nathan and her play non stop. Nathan will actually go places without me (out back, potty) if Bella goes with him. And she loves him. She cries when he goes down for his nap or is at school. Caden is not too interested in her, but will occasionally try and stick his fingers in her mouth, ear, eyes, etc. Bella just takes it, moves away from him or we rescue her. She is yappy and licky, but I guess that is expected from a dog.

Then there is Scott. I know he would have liked something younger and bigger, but he does enjoy her. He can often be found watching tv and cuddling with her on the couch in the evenings.

I enjoy the company when Scott is at school Monday and Tuesday evenings. And the relief I get from not having to entertain Nathan constantly is fabulous. I hate the messes, but all in all I think it was worth it.

Here she is the day we found her.

Here we are playing in the back yard with her for the first time. She is such a sweetie pie. Unfortunately Nathan wears her out much sooner than she wears him out :) .

I took her to the vet yesterday and everything was fine. She is healthy and probably close to a year old. She isn't spayed, so that is something we will have to look into, but other than that she is all up to date on her shots. I joke that her and Caden are on the same level, always getting into things they shouldn't be. The vet informed us that she is most likely a pure breed rat terrier.

Nathan's First Day of School

So the first of September was Nathan's first day of school... well, sort of. Some girls in my ward and I got together and started a little co-op preschool. There are six kids and two mom's do one week, a Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am-12pm. One mom teaches the other is just there to help. I get two weeks off and then one week to just help, two weeks off and then teach one week. It has been so nice and Nathan just loves it. He gets to take a sack lunch and they eat at 11:30pm. I get time with Caden, or just to run errands.

Okay, so I did get a little teary eyed, but I am sure it will be worse when he starts "real" school.

Caden's Hospital fun

So here is the scoop. Sunday during our weekend in Corpus Christi Caden felt a little bit warm to me, but I didn't think much of it because we had pushed him so hard the day before (no naps and not much sleep that night). We got home Sunday evening and Monday morning he felt a little warm, his temp was 99.8. Tuesday his temp was 101.5 and he couldn't keep anything down that morning. Wednesday, August 20th, his temp was 103.3 and he started throwing up again. I got a doctor's appointment for him and dropped Nathan off at Grandma and Grandpa's house.

The pediatrician I saw said she wouldn't be worried about just his temp if he was acting fine, but he was so lethargic, he wouldn't move unless I moved him. So she sent us to the ER to get some more tests run. Scott and my Dad met us there. It was my Dad that first noticed that the right side of his neck was swollen and the ER Doc immediately ordered x-rays and a CT scan. They found an early abscess. Basically an abscess that is forming but isn't complete yet. It was in one of his lymph nodes in his neck. They started him on two antibiotics and took a lot of blood to try and figure out what kind of bacteria was giving him the infection. It was horrible. They also did a lumbar puncture on him to make sure it wasn't meningitis. After the first night there his neck more than doubled in size. Basically the antibiotics weren't getting to the infection. He was one sick little boy. They had to put him on steroids to break down the walls of the abscess just enough to push the antibiotics through. Friday morning saw a huge decrease in the swelling and his fever gone. They let him go home on Saturday with oral nasty tasting antibiotics. While we were in the hospital his IV would go bad every 12 hours almost on the dot. He ended up having an IV in both arms and both ankles. They would try to draw blood and it would take them 30 minutes to find a vein just to not get enough because the vein would quit working only to come back a few hours later to try again. We were so exhausted by the time we left. Needless to say I didn't document that visit.

Caden finished his oral antibiotics on Monday, September 1, and Thursday of that week Scott and I noticed Caden's neck swelling up again. Friday Cade had a follow up with his pediatrician and I told her about the swelling. She got on the phone with a bunch of other doctor's and ended up readmitting him to the hospital. They didn't want it to get to the point it had last time. They say that the bacteria he has looks similar to cat scratch fever, but it isn't that. This time, since Caden was so well, I decided to take some pictures of him in his cute little gown.

This is while we were waiting for the hospital to get us a room.

See Mom, I am sick!

There was a linen closet in our room that Caden quickly found.

Cute hubby on the phone with his folks.
They did another CT scan and it had become a full abscess. Since they had already tried the antibiotics and it had still become worse, they decided to go ahead and cut into Cade's neck and drain it. That was on Saturday, September6th. The Surgeon said there was a lot of dead tissue and pus and that there was no way antibiotics would have killed it, it had to be drained. He cleaned out the entire lymph node and we hope that takes care of it. It was a minor surgery but they had to put him completely under. These next pitures were taken about an hour after the surgery was over. Can you believe the kid just had surgery!

That is gauze on his neck covering the incision and a pin rose, it looks like a tiny PVC pipe that they put in to let the abscess continue to drain.

Nathan and I trying to catch some Zzzzz's.

Cade snuggling with Grandma and eating cheerios.

Sunday Nathan and Dad brought our Sunday breakfast tradition of pancakes!

Cade loves pancakes.

Monday we douns out that we had one more day at least left in the hospital to let the abscess continue to drain and to keep him on IV antibitoics. This is a shot I got of him doing his cheesy fake smile that he started giving us in the hospital.

He loves anything with a small handle; silveryware, hammer's, shovels, etc.

They let us go home on Tuesday on more oral antibiotics. They left the incision open to continue to drain. Needless to say, we are exhausted. The doctors never figured out what bacteria Caden had, but there is a chance it is something called A-typical micro bacterium. If it is that his neck will probably swell up again within the next 6-12 weeks and his lymph node will probably have to be removed. But as of right now we are just going on the assumption that what ever it is is gone and we are done.

Caden in the Hospital

Sorry it has been so long and so far between each post. I can't write much now, but am asking you all to keep our family in your prayers. Caden (our 1 year old) is back in the hospital (he was in the hospital 2 weeks ago) because of an abscess on his neck. Yesterday he had minor surgery to drain it and all in all is doing great. I will write more after we get home (hopefully tomorrow!) and explain things better. Right now we are just playing a waiting game and hoping that this removed the bacterial infection. If it doesn't and the abscess returns he will probably have to have the lymph node the abscess is in removed, but it will be any where from 6-12 weeks before we know if that is needed. Feel free to call my cell phone if you would like any more info, otherwise I will hopefully update this thing soon. We love you all and appreciate your love and concern!!!

Trip to Corpus Christi

So my parents decided (with prodding from Nathan) to pay for us to go to Corpus Christi with them for the weekend. It is all because my mom has this picture of Jonny and David in Yachats Oregon walking along some rocks next to the ocean. His latest thing to say is, "I want to walk in the Ocean." My parents response was always, "Ask you mom and dad." They of course knew that it was financially not possible, so took it upon themselves to make his little dreams come true, at least as much of an Ocean the gulf of Mexico can be. It is not the pacific, that's for sure.

So, we left Saturday morning and drove 2 hours to meet my parents at the aquarium. We had a good time touching sting rays and holding crabs.

Caden liked the animals, really he did.

Nathan never actually touched it, but he liked to get as close as he dared before pulling back and squeeling.

Scott even got in on the action.

David, Jonny and Nathan

This was the creepiest little crab. He kepot trying to pinch me. I am so used to them hiding in their shells, but this one was a little bit too friendly.

Cader (his latest nickname) had a grand time walking around.

Or, being carried by his dad. He still is not very comfortable with anyone else, especially when he doesn't get his nap.

Nathan, however, wants nothing to do with his own family when Uncles and grandparents are around.

My parents were so nice and got us a room at a four star hotel. The omni right on the Corpus Christi bay. They also got a room at the Omni, but wierdly enough it was a hotel two blocks from ours. We were sad we weren't in the same building, but it gave my family some time away from the babies for a bit.

I should know better than to lay on the floor when there are children around... active, jumpy children who love to pounce!

Nathan loved having new and exciting places to drive his cars.

We all really enjoyed the view. Sunday morning we even saw two Dolphins playing. It was my first trip to the Ocean ever seeing wildlife. I'm glad it was Dolphins.

Unfortunately Saturday night there was a huge thunderstorm and both boys ended up in bed with us. We didn't sleep well at all. And after a day with no naps all ready the kids were CRANKY! The parents might have been as well.

Saturday afternoon we made Nathan's dreams come true... well, sort of. He actually was walking in Corpus Christi bay, but it came from the ocean, had waves and you couldn't see across it. Plus it was a good place for my scardy cat children to get used to the sound of waves crashing, not nearly as loud as the Ocean beaches.

Nathan eventually came out with one of us holding him, and even let us get him wet. He had a fabulous time.

Caden on the other hand, hated the water, and at first hated the sand on his feet.

Eventually both boys had fun playing in the sane, Caden even getting to eat some of it.

Caden loves anything with handles. For a while it was a little toy hammer, now he still carries around his shovel.

Daddy and Cader having fun building castles.

Grandma eventually took over and Scott, David, Jonny and me took a ball out and played "Monkey in the Middle." That was when we spotted the jellyfish... with Jonny's arm. We actually counted 8 in one small area. We moved out of their way and continued playing until Scott decided to pelt Jonny in a very sensetive area. Then a jelly fish got the back of Scott's leg, and thus ended our day in the water... well, mine and Jonny's. Granpa, Scott and David didn't let the jellyfish keep them out of the water. But I started seeing them everywhere!

We still had fun burying Uncle Jonny in the sand though!

Caden eventually had to get in the water to get unsandified. He didn't care for it much.

Nathan, my child who is terrified of water, is getting much better. Hearing the Michael Phelps wouldn't put his head underwater either gives me hope that someday my boy might swim.

If only Cade's eyes were open, this would be a great picture!

Our attempts at a family portrait!

Have I ever told you how friendly Nathan is? Well let me tell you now. It is not to just anyone, no. My son finds the prettiest girl around and promptly plops down next to here exclaiming he is, "five years old" and striking up a conversation of his many accomplishments. Well we were shocked when he suddenly got down from his chair at our table and turned and sat next to Andrea, a sweet twenty something having dinner with her parents. The three of them waved us off and kept Nathan entertained until their food arrived, a good 15 minutes at least. I finally went over to relieve them and ended up starting up a convorsation with them myself. The mom explained how she had a little boy die at birth about five years before and they loved seeing boys and thinking of what their own little guy would be like. Of course I told them about my own loss and we talked about how each of us has healed. It was a truly inspiring moment for me, I love meeting people who have shared similar experiences and discussing the different ways we've each learned to cope. They asked if they could take pictures with Nathan, so of course I agreed and grabbed my own camera. What a blessing Nathan has been in our lives! He is such a sweet and social little boy and truly delights us! He is my darling baby!

Scott decided we wanted proof of how unruly Nathan was in the hotel. Here he is jumping on the bed... again!

On Sunday we drove down to South Padre Island

I had grand visions of doing a family picture while we were there, unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate and it had to be postponed.

Here is Nathan, he is supposed to be cleaning up his toys....

The silly boys decided that despite the rain they were going to play in the real Ocean... and chase birds.

We had a good time! Thanks mom and dad!
